An open letter from the OSA students:

As OSA students, we write to express our dismay at OSA’s high rate of teacher turnover. We understand that teachers love our students, but OSA’s abysmal compensation, lack of security, and last-minute job offers force many inspiring educators to give up their dream job. Teacher working conditions are student learning conditions—as students, we want stability, not chaos, for our students and for the OSA community as a whole. We respect the humanity and wellbeing of teachers; we do not see teachers as disposable, but as people who deserve living wages and fair work conditions.

OSA’s commitment to diversity is meaningless if we can’t retain teachers of color because the pay is too low or because inconsistent personnel policies poison morale by casting doubt on basic fairness. In short, OSA cannot be the heart of Oakland if OSA teachers have a broken heart.

We urge OSA’s administrators and board of directors to move heaven and earth to meet teacher demands* for fairness and transparency, job security, built-in cost of living adjustments and a dramatic salary adjustment to deliver relief after years of neglect.

With Oakland love,

OSA students and allies
