Samantha Williams started this petition to Educational Instiution Oakland Military Institute and

At the beginning of this school year, the students of Oakland Military Institute (OMI) were promised not to have a full day of school on Friday’s. Friday’s were supposed to allow students time to catch up on work, help students with college readiness, and talk to their teachers if we needed help. Ever since the start of school, OMI has changed our schedules multiple times causing confusion and undue stress to all students.  At first, it started off as two quick 10-15-minute formations, which was not so bad. One at 10:30 AM and one at 1:00 PM. Now the Oakland Unified School District and the California Department of Education are requiring OMI to teach Monday through Friday for 240 minutes a day. Some of us have work on throughout the week and have family obligations since we are now all stuck at home helping and taking care of family members because of COVID-19. Adults have lost their jobs during this pandemic, had started relying on students to help around our own households. This puts other students and me, that have activities pre-planned on Friday’s, like work or sports, in a bad position. Students are struggling already from distance learning, along with loads of classwork. The fact that classes are an hour and a half long as well is unacceptable. Many students are now getting headaches, eye strain, and depression because of class length and the amount of “schoolwork” and homework. We should not be required to look at a screen on zoom for anything over 30 to 45 minutes per class. This is taking a mental toll on OMI students. Our demands are as such:

1. Remove the 240 minutes a day for 5 days a week requirement and replace it 1,200 minutes a week.

2. Make it mandatory that schools can not require you to be on zoom or looking at the screen for no more than 45 minutes without at least a 20-minute break. Our mental health and physical health matters.

3. Teachers can give no more than 2 assignments per class period which total no more than 20 minutes of additional work. ie. If a class is 75 minutes long, we do 45 minutes of learning on video and 20 minutes of graded work that is to be completed during the class period. Since we are already at home, everything is considered homework. We should not have classwork and then homework as well.

4. Students and parents should be consulted and asked for feedback before any changes are made to the entire school’s schedule or required hours of attendance.
