Decrease Melton Lake Drive Speed Limit

Decrease Melton Lake Drive Speed Limit
This petition is to convince city leaders to permanently decrease the speed limit from 45 mph on the North end of Melton Lake Drive to 40 mph, matching the existing speed limit for the South end of Melton Lake Drive. The North end of Melton Lake Drive has heavier pedestrian traffic than the South end, with pedestrians walking within mere feet of the traffic lanes.
The second part of this petition is to also champion for a temporary speed decrease to 35 mph on the North end of Melton Lake Drive during rowing events. This area is extremely congested with vehicles and pedestrians during these events and the current 45 mph speed limit poses a huge safety concern. The city should post temporary lower speed limit signs during these events.
A study completed in 2011 determined that the average risk of severe injury for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle reaches 50% at 31 mph, 75% at 39 mph, and 90% at 46 mph. The average risk of death for a pedestrian reaches 25% at 32 mph, 50% at 42 mph, 75% at 50 mph, and 90% at 58 mph. The lives and safety of members of our community is worth the decrease in speed.
