Lillie Amstad started this petition to NZ Police Minister (Poto Williams) and

Kia Ora! We are Level 3 social studies students at NPGHS conducting a policy of turning the discussion of arming of New Zealand police into a public referendum.

The discussion of arming New Zealand police became a topic following the trial of Eli Epiha, who pleaded guilty to murdering Constable Matthew Hunt and the attempted murder of Constable David Goldfinch. The reasoning behind wanting to have permanent arming of police is to have more relief and safety when they are on duty, but the safety of the community also needs to be taken into account. Would this increase unnecessary shootings? Will there be a decrease in the trust between the public and police?

The proposed policy of the general arming of New Zealand Police is not a decision for the government or the police commissioners, it is a decision for the New Zealand public as we are the community that would be majorly affected the most. It is not only about the police officers safety but also the safety of the people.

With New Zealand being a democratic country, making this discussion into a referendum would help ensure the government chooses an outcome that is best suited for the citizens of New Zealand and will show that the public opinion still matters to help better the country.

Help us inform the officials about the importance of the public’s opinion towards arming of the police. Having your signature on this petition will help get our voices one step closer to a referendum!
