NYSPI: Release my non-violent, voluntarily admitted son after the hospital caused an adverse drug reaction

Patients with a mental health disorder are treated differently than other patients in the health care system of this country. They often are told that illnesses are "just in their head" and are often denied basic medical care. In additon, mental health patients are often denied their civil liberties just because they have a MEDICAL condition. The hospitals, media, and health care professionals add to the stigma of these patients. My son who recently lost three family members was having difficulty dealing with the deaths, the first he ever experienced. He went to the doctors only to adjust his medication. He was voluntarily admitted for rapid titration of his dose so he could get better quickly. He was non-violent. The doctors with prior knowledge of his condition gave him medication that caused a severe, potentially life threatening adverse drug reaction. The doctors told me a month later that they finally read his chart and should have known about his conditon. My son is now refusing medication because he is afraid of having more reactions and does not trust these doctors. The doctors are retaliating by trying to have him forcefully medicated and threatened to try to have him involuntarily committed. He is being treated like a criminal when his only fault is having a medical condition. Mental Health care needs to be changed in this country. These patients are PEOPLE and their CIVIL LIBERTIES should not be taken from them!
