Allow parent spectators for Section VI Winter Athletics

Allow parent spectators for Section VI Winter Athletics
Why this petition matters
The decision to not allow spectators for Section VI Winter sports is very disconcerting. New York State and the Erie County Department of Health have both determined that it is safe to allow up to two spectators per athlete in rinks and courts. Most of these athletes play their sport for a club or travel organization as well as their high school. Games are played in the exact same courts and rinks for high school and outside organizations. These facilities are allowing one or two spectators per athlete (depending on the facility) for these same athletes and same sports. It is understandable that Section VI would choose to restrict student spectators, but why the parents? Our parents live with these athletes, drive them to and from practices and games and in general are in close proximity to the athletes continuously. Parent spectators are a part of the athlete’s quarantine bubbles. Athletes and their immediate family members are taking recommended, and most cases extra, precautions so as not to jeopardize their ability to participate in high school and club sports. It seems an insult to the parents of athletes who have paid thousands of dollars over the years to allow their children to play sports to pay for access to watch a mediocre at best livestream of the games. The Section is preventing parent spectators from watching the games live; therefore The Section should grant access at no charge to ANY spectator wishing to livestream games.
