NYSDOT and Public Officials: FIX LAWRENCE STREET NOW
NYS DOT Must Act on Lawrence Street @ Saw Mill
The sudden overdevelopment on-and-around the Saw Mill River Parkway is posing a threat to our community’s safety.
Specifically: the intersections of the Saw Mill at Lawrence Street and 9A – are dangerous, and need to be fixed.
And the 3+ year reconstruction of the Ashford Avenue bridge has increased this risk exponentially, as tens-of-thousands of cars, each day, are being redirected through these choke points.
Also, of course, Rivertowns Square and The Lofts at Saw Mill are coming online very, very soon, and the increased traffic will only make a bad situation much, much worse.
Here are some simple and obvious actions that need to be taken ASAP.
1) Add an extended north-bound turn lane and right turn light at Lawrence Street and Saw Mill North:
During the recent “upgrading” of the Saw Mill @ Lawrence Street intersection, the northbound right turn lane was mistakenly removed. Please correct this mistake immediately.
2) Add a “go around” lane on 9A northbound at Lawrence Street.
Cars turning left from 9A North onto Lawrence Street hold up all traffic on 9A North. This is unnecessary. Please turn the existing bus stop into a “go around” lane, so cars continuing north are not held up, and move the bus stop to another, safer location.
3) Add an extended right turn lane on 9A southbound at Lawrence Street.
Since the only way to get onto Saw Mill North is via Lawrence Street, traffic is already backing up past Colony Street.
We use the term “extended” here on purpose. Many of the existing turn lanes on the Saw Mill, and 9A are too short to hold more than a couple cars at a time. Let’s not repeat that mistake: please make sure these additional lanes can hold at least a dozen cars.
Lives are in danger. The time to act is now.
