Support Housing Options for Adults with Autism

Described by some as an “autism tsunami” the prevalence of autism is rising in epidemic proportions throughout our country. Today, there are more than 50,000 individuals with autism transitioning to adulthood each year and the support  services available to them are woefully inadequate.  For children, ages birth to 21 years of age, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), provides a range of free or low-cost services - medical evaluations, psychological services, speech therapy, physical therapy, parent counseling and training, assisted technology devices, and other specialized services through the school districts. As these children “age out” of this system, that support vanishes and this population is left to navigate a system which is unequipped to support their needs. Traversing through daily life - relationships, education, housing, employment, finances and healthcare – can be impossible for adults with autism trying to live on their own. The result- nearly 80% of adults with autism between the ages of 19 and 30 are still living at home; and only 20% of adults 16 years and older with autism are employed.

Last year, four organizations (3tarchitects; Vecino Group; Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region; and Spotted Zebra Learning Center) got together and created Mosaic Village - a housing community that will offer an innovative, integrated, sustainable and replicable model for supportive housing for adults with autism. To ensure that our population is successful day to day, a One Stop model of services will be located on site to help adults navigate the complicated system of federal entitlements, programs and potential benefits that are available to them.  This One Stop will work with not only the consumer residing at Mosaic Village but those living in nearby communities.

We need your support to make this happen in the Capital District of New York State. An application to fund Mosaic Village will be submitted to NYS Housing and Community Renewal in early October. Please help us let them know the importance and the value of this project to so many in our community.
