Mandate that self-defense classes be taught to NY state students from grades K-12 as part of the physical education program
We the undersigned call on the NYS Board of Regents and the NYS Legislature to mandate that self defense classes be taught to students from grades K-12 as part of their physical education programs.
The frightening reality is that students, both male and female, are at risk of being sexually assaulted - a risk that only increases with age. According to a White House study, almost 50% of female survivors were raped before they were 18, and over 25% of male survivors were raped before the age of 10. By the time a girl turns 18, she has a one in five chance of being raped in her lifetime, and men, a one in thirty-three chance.
For this reason, it is critical to empower young students with self-defense skills that enable them to minimize their risk of being assaulted. Self-defense cannot be learned in just a day or even a week, the techniques require consistent practice and instruction to be utilized effectively. Teaching students self-defense from grades K-12 will provide them with the consistent training necessary to properly defend themselves in the event of an attack. Additionally, teaching self-defense increases students' confidence and sense of security, which translates to better performance in the classroom. Through this initiative we can minimize students' risk of being assaulted and increase their self-confidence.
