Why this petition matters

Started by Emily Miller

5 million Americans, 65 years and older, are living with Alzheimer's disease in 2020 and this number is expected to continue growing at a rapid pace (Alzheimer's Association, 2020). It is likely that you, or someone you know has worked with or cared for someone with Alzheimer's or a different type of dementia. With a growing number of diagnoses, comes a growing number of professionals and caregivers that are providing daily care for these individuals. The problem is that there is a lack of educational and outreach programs for these caregivers and professionals who are struggling everyday.

If passed, NYS Assembly Bill A.5666 would add in a section to the current public health law that establishes an Alzheimer's disease outreach and educational program for medical and non-medical professionals who work with New Yorkers and their families. The predicted outcomes for this bill would be: to promote earlier identification of dementia in health care facilities, provide information and assistance on appropriate community support services, and promote public awareness of and access to resources concerning Alzheimer’s disease and any dementia related matters (nyassembly.gov, 2019). With no cure for Alzheimer's disease in sight, it is crucial that we get caregivers the resources and supports they need to successfully care for themselves and their loved one or client. Take the time to understand the facts and figures of Alzheimer's disease here, and consider signing this petition to help pass this bill.
