RENOVATE, CLEAN ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN
I am writing this letter regarding my experience and the status of the Community Center, Ravenswood Community Center Sponsor: DYCD/Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement. I have been volunteering my time since October 17, 2011 for the health and wellness of the community by presenting Zumba classes.
On June 1, 2013, I enter the community center at 10:15am and found a series of many issues that cannot be dismissed:
• Water bugs running around
• A Rodent (small mouse) was stuck on a glue trap
• Water damage from a leak, which has now, causing some mold and other noticeable issues.
* Urine dripping down from the walls because of the pipes.
What makes this situation different is that it is personal. I went to the trash can to throw out something and a mouse jumped out of the trash pail. The mouse almost landed on my five year old son’s face. I thought hard about this actually happening to someone’s child. In addition, the respiratory issues that people may have coming to this community center. I have gone to many other Housing Facility Centers, and this is one of the worse centers I have seen, attended and volunteered. I have lived in this community since 1988 and the center has not been renovated.
It is unfortunate, that it takes a letter from a concern parent, neighbor, and a volunteer to point out serious issues which can later cause many different problems to the children who attend this program full-time during the summer and afterschool program. This is a cry for help and a concern that I am asking for someone to provide a better quality of health and life for the people, children, and volunteers at my local community center.
