Why this petition matters

The intersection of Hicks Street and Kane Street in Cobble Hill—an overpass of the BQE—is known to be one of the most dangerous in Brooklyn. We propose addressing this risk to the flocks of school children who cross this dangerous road every day. Hicks is actually two separate one-way streets; each running on one side of the BQE. The northbound side is both a highly-frequented truck route and a street heavily trafficked by cars avoiding new lane reductions on the BQE. The traffic on Hicks faces a light at Kane, but very frequently those cars ignore or creep through the light. The Kane Street crossing traffic also gets backed up frequently with the BQE lane closures, and often cars get stuck in this intersection, leaving pedestrians nowhere to cross. Many cars turn on red, trying to take advantage of any opening. This is, of course, very dangerous for the masses of children crossing here.

Additionally, there is a major blind spot for pedestrians crossing northbound Hicks on the south-side crosswalk. It’s very difficult to see oncoming traffic; you have to peek around a corner, and cars come within a foot of that space.

Currently there are no crossing guards at this treacherous intersection. Our community desperately needs crossing guards to help our children maneuver all the way across Hicks street—both in the morning and in the afternoon. Our community needs two crossing guards who will be active in protecting our children.

As a community, we must ensure the safety of our children. This intersection is a major tragedy waiting to happen. Before it’s too late, please support this petition requesting that the NYC Police Department place two crossing guards at this busy intersection. Our children—and parents—will thank you.
