For the second time in two weeks, another New York City carriage horse has collapsed. What's even more upsetting is the conditions in which these animals are forced to work. These horses endure 9 hour work days in bitter cold, stifling heat all while breathing in the car exhaust from New York's congested streets. Their days off consist of being kept in small stalls without open fields where a horse can have a chance to roam and graze. Although most polls have shown that 75% are in favor of a ban, and New York city has the highest rate of horse drawn carriage accidents, City Hall has remained firmly on the side of the carriage companies. Many cities such as London, Las Vegas, Beijing, Toronto, and Paris have already implemented a ban due to the inhumane nature of the business.
We are urging Mayor Bloomberg to please support Intro 86 which proposes using hybrid classic cars instead of horse drawn carriages for tourism and Intro 92 which proposes to ban the horse drawn carriage industry and place the existing horses into loving home
