Bring Ferry Service to Bay Ridge!

Direct commuter ferry service in Bay Ridge ended when the deteriorating 69th Street Pier was closed back in the early 90’s. Since then many groups have fought to bring it back.
In 2004, Councilman Vincent Gentile secured funds specifically for the construction of a 20 x 30 foot ferry slip to be attached to the newly renovated American Veterans Memorial Pier. The effort had the full support of the Department of Transportation and a unanimous vote from Community Board 10.
The push to return ferry service to Bay Ridge reached its apex in 2008 when local musician & activist Heather McCown and the Sunset-Ridge Waterfront Alliance delivered 1,500 signatures to Mayor Bloomberg demanding a ferry from Bay Ridge to Lower Manhattan.
In the end, the NYC Economic Development Corporation decided it would be “more economical” to give Sunset Park a new dock at 58th Street than to renovate the existing dock here at 69th Street.
As you all know, when it comes to public transportation, Bay Ridge is all but ignored. While our unique & vibrant neighborhood grows by leaps and bounds, there are fewer bus and subway options than ever.
We are a hard-working community and we deserve fast & relaible transportation to and from Manhattan. That's why it's time to bring back ferry service to Bay Ridge once and for all.
Just think: Bay Ridge to Wall Street in 20 minutes. This would be an absolute GAME CHANGER for our neck of the woods -- a dream for commuters a boon for our local small businesses. Together we can make this happen.
There are a lot of changes coming in 2013 – especially a brand new mayor. Let’s make returning ferry service to Bay Ridge a cause that can’t be ignored!
