Reinstate Middle School Gifted and Talented Programs in the Bronx

Middle school Gifted & Talented programs existed in District 11 until they were discontinued in 2014 without consultation or vote from the parents and families of District 11 public school students. Re-establishing the G&T program at the middle school level will bridge the existing gap between elementary school and high school for CURRENT and FUTURE G&T students. Rebuilding this pipeline will provide students with the consistency afforded by this specialized educational path as well as increase diversity in the Specialized High Schools. More citywide G&T programs, which are proving to be successful models, should be implemented in the Bronx. The lack of middle school G&T programs in this city, especially in traditionally underserved communities such as the Bronx, is unsustainable and perhaps the most significant impediment to a strong K-8 pipeline to the city’s Specialized High Schools. Strong middle school G&T programs must be re-established. Bronx students are disproportionately represented in the Specialized High Schools - representing only 13% of the student body at the Bronx High School of Science compared to the 58% coming from Queens. Resource & Statistics
We are calling for swift action to reinstate the G&T program in middle schools so that the pipeline of feeder schools to high school is never broken.
