Re-evaluate Sexist Dress Code Policy
Re-evaluate Sexist Dress Code Policy
Why this petition matters
Girls at NUHS have been disproportionately receiving warnings about showing “excessive skin” such as midriffs, collarbones, cleavage, or showing undergarments. Although this is the dress-code policy, it can be uncomfortable and is only made a problem when faculty addresses it. Instead of keeping clothing “appropriate,” these rules continue to sexualize teen girls’ bodies. This petition is not to eliminate the dress-code, but instead re-evaluate it to make it more equal for all genders and all bodies. In Section C.1 of the General Statement Policy, “‘Short shorts,’ skimpy tank tops, tops that expose the midriff, and other clothing that is not in keeping with community standards,” unfairly prejudices against women, sexualizing parts of the body that are not sexual. This petition is in favor of eliminating C.1 from the dress-code.
