Improve Road Conditions to Lorella Springs Wilderness Park!

Hi, This is Rhett Walker, as many who have been to Lorella would be aware my family have owned the beautiful pristine property for over 30 years. Possibly the largest ongoing issues we have had to endure over the time in this isolated and remote region is the poor condition of our Public Access Road. The lack of maintenance and upgrading that does not take place along the SAVANNAH WAY and in particular the Public Access Road into Lorella Springs has been building up for a while now.

Originally built as a beef road for road trains processing pastoral properties in the region. The Old Nathan River Road (Savannah Way) was built to a high standard. By the time my family moved here in 1984, the road was classed as Hi-Way no. 1 across the top end at Australia. Back then the government would run a grader over the road 3 times a year. The road has been gradually deteriorating. About 15 years ago Tourism NT re-branded the road as the New Adventure Drive between Cairns to Broome (SAVANNAH WAY) with a plan for more funding and develop the region. But still the road is falling apart- each year and becoming worse than the year before.

At Lorella Springs we try to make everyone’s stay the best that we can. We do our best to greet every vehicle on arrival & check in and the one feedback we receive every time is how bad the road is, especially the Public Access Road to Lorella Springs Wilderness Park. After approaching numerous government departments, submitting an infrastructure grant, letters of support from many members and sector at the community. It has fallen to deaf ears. Driving is already the most dangerous way to travel, and having roads that are falling apart, full of potholes and corrugation puts the lives of many who visit Northern Territory in danger. Along with thousands of dollars’ worth of damage done to cars on the road.  Our squeaky wheel is not working thus we have started this petition.

Northern Territory government’s initiative to contribute to the national Tourism 2020 strategy by driving demand, improving quality and increasing tourism requires a support to local tourist destination, such as Lorella Springs Wilderness Park.  After all, any extra effort by the government would be pale in comparison to increase in tourism Northern Territory would likely experience as road quality improves and tourist experience in Northern Territory improves.

We are asking anyone that maybe a member at government that as a member of government, it is your job to make sure there is enough money available to keep the roads in good condition.  Please work with your colleagues and find the money necessary to improve the condition of this road to help tourism flourish in Gulf Region.

 Thank you for your support.

Kind Regards,

Rhett Walker
