Liz Macnamara started this petition to Paul Toole (Minister for Regional Transport and Roads) and

Current state laws prevent use of electric-powered light vehicles without pedals  in NSW (ebikes are allowed but not escooters). We understand the laws surrounding electric-powered light vehicles are already under review because of their obvious advantage in relieving traffic congestion and low carbon footprint.

Trials of hired electric scooters are being considered in Manly and Bondi. We suggest that an alternate trial on the Woy Woy peninsula of privately-owned escooters would provide a useful benchmark currently lacking in discussions about these vehicles. We expect that such a trial will show that privately-owned vehicle riders demonstrate more care and consideration for other road and footpath users, and  ride more competently as they become familiar with the nuances of riding their vehicles reducing risk. Furthermore, that private ownership of seated escooters is favoured by people with mild-moderate difficulties in walking due to age and injury, enabling them greater participation in the community at a fraction of the cost and carbon footprint of cars.
