NSW FORMALS TO GO AHEAD: Support 2020 Year 12 and let them celebrate!

On the 17th of August, 2020, Gladys Berejiklian, Premier of New South Wales, announced that all school formals and graduation ceremonies were to be banned, following newly introduced COVID-19 safety restrictions.

It is my belief that the Classes of 2020 deserve to have their achievements celebrate, and to celebrate themselves at formals. This cohort has faced greater adversity than any other year group. They were expected to work through a global pandemic with very minimal compromise from the NSW Education Standards Authority.

In May, students were made to return to on campus learning, told by the NSW Government and health authorities that they would be safe and social distancing would not apply due to coronavirus not spreading among students. Teachers were protected for a month but all is now back to normal.

At this stage in the year, the various year 12 cohorts are sitting their trial HSC exams. All 80-150+ students are crammed into multiple classrooms or exam halls WITH TEACHERS, for approximately 2 or 3 hours.

So why can’t this year group celebrate with the people whom they are forced into non socially distanced exam rooms with everyday? Why can they not celebrate their overcoming of adversity at a school formal with the students they have had close contact with for 6 years straight?
