By damming the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn with a causeway between Brooklyn and Long Island to facilitate the rail crossing over 100 years ago, the NSW State Government has caused a looming environmental disaster for the channel between the mainland and the island.  The channel is becoming a silt and toxic sludge laden mud flat.  The simple solution is to replace all or part of the causeway with a bridge or culvert.  This can easily be achieved during the urgent upgrade works required on the Hawkesbury River Rail Bridge.
