Donna Hogan started this petition to NSW Government and

There are 332 public schools in NSW that have friable asbestos in their school grounds and buildings. According to the NSW Government, friable asbestos is high risk and can be ‘crumbled, pulverised or reduced to a powder by hand pressure’ https://www.asbestos.nsw.gov.au/identify-asbestos/what-is-asbestos/friable-and-non-friable-asbestos.

Asbestos kills. Approximately 4,000 Australians die every year from illnesses caused by exposure, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.

My daughter attends a public high school. The school is listed on the NSW Government Schools Asbestos Register as having Chrysotile (white asbestos) throughout the school. The school also has an Asbestos in Grounds Management Plan for the oval and staff carpark.

The Australian Government Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency states that chrysotile can cause mesothelioma and other cancers. Further, the Agency says that any form of asbestos is a major health concern and risk of developing cancer following exposure is unequivocal https://www.asbestossafety.gov.au/sites/asea/files/documents/2019-04/CHRYSOTILE%20KEY%20FACTS_180419%20final_0.pdf,

The NSW Education Minister believes her Department is managing the risk by maintaining the registers and considers any scare campaign around asbestos in schools as ‘unfortunate’ .

But it is scary! Our kids are at school for the majority of the week and a good portion of the year. We have no choice but to send them to school. The ceilings in my daughter’s school leak following rain events which can further compromise the asbestos and increase the risk of asbestos fibres being released. The oval is used constantly and the surface is highly variable, dust bowl one minute, mud pit the next, which allows the material specified in the the Grounds Management Plan to rise to the surface.

If your child attends a public school, or you know someone who works in this environment, check the NSW Government Schools Asbestos Register https://education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/strategies-and-reports/our-reports-and-reviews/schools-asbestos-register. Lobby your local Federal and State members of Parliament and ask them to agitate to get action on this issue.

The NSW Government must put an asbestos removal plan in place now that guarantees its removal from all NSW Public Schools by 2030.

Please sign this petition and show our children, and the dedicated staff that look after them while they are at school, that we care about their health and future.
