Thomas Ebersoll started this petition to NSW Department of Planning Industry and Environment

They want to destroy the Wolgan River

Centennial has lodged an Amendment Report to their Development Application (SSD 5602) for the extension of operations at Angus Place colliery. The plan is to mine coal until 2053 and take out all coal of the mining lease underneath the Newnes Plateau.

The project has “one of the most destructive mine layouts in NSW in recent times” and will:

  • Fracture the rock which will drain the surface water and change the ground water table.
  • Drain five Newnes Plateau shrub swamps as well as several Newnes Plateau hanging swamps.
  • Destroy the habitat of endangered species such as the Blue Mountains Water Skink, the Giant Dragonfly and the Red Crowned Toadlet.
  • Drain the water catchment of Carne Creek and the Wolgan River.

“The Wolgan River and Carne Creek are likely to be drained and cease to flow altogether.”

These devastating consequences are irreversible – in perpetuity – but could be avoided by a less greedy mine layout.

We ask the NSW Department of Planning Industry and Environment to reject the amended Planning Application SSD 5602 outright or at least demand changes to the mining layout so that the damage to the Wolgan River, Carne Creek and the Newnes Plateau swamps is minimized.
