The correlation between nutritional deficiencies in school cafeteria foods and poor health among Rogers-area youth is undeniable. Every week, Rogers public schools offer a broad selection of fried, salty, processed foods, with little or no regard for how students' overall health may be affected by them. These unhealthy meal options are helping to create poor eating habits that affect students' dietary decisions outside of school as well, and the end result has been a significant rise in teen obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.  According to a recent study, a whopping 30% of Arkansas teens are overweight now. Unfortunately, without a dramatic change in the way that our schools and young people view diet, these statistics are certain to become even worse.

In order to solve this problem, Rogers public school administrators and school health advisors will need to become more accountable for dietary influences by providing accurate nutritional information on all meal options to students and their parents. The addition of healthier food options to school menus must be mandated, and programs must be formed with the goal of educating students, and equipping them with the knowledge they need to make healthy eating choices. These changes are critically important in achieving better health for future generations of our city's youth.
