Jason McFarlane started this petition to nrc and

Deep within Lancaster County is a nuclear plant with aging operations that overshadow the legacy of our family farm. The rolling hills, creek beds and corn fields we hope to pass on down to our children are sadly within the warning zone around several nuclear reactors for which Exelon has already received 60 years of license to operate! Now they are asking for another 20 years but when will enough be, enough?

This nuclear station is the same style as the one that melted down following loss of cooling power during 2011’s disaster in Fukushima, Japan. People near Exelon’s other plant which is getting shut down this year have reported elevated levels of cancer and we just don’t feel as safe as can be on our land that has been passed from one generation to another even with a roof that reflects radiation because we don’t know when this plant will have a meltdown of it’s own. We want to see the license suspended and no other licenses issued for nuclear in Lancaster County where there are too many people to justify this type of activity.

Joining us in this petition is standing up for what’s right. It’s standing up against corporate tyranny where an out-of-state corporation’s profits are being put before the people. We understand that it employs over 700 people who altogether get paid over $80 million annually but many great opportunities can now be found in wind & solar industries so this is the perfect time for them to quit while we’re all ahead. Many of our wonderful Amish & Mennonite neighbors practice a religion that precludes them from getting activistic but with your support we will all sleep better at night knowing that a potential disaster waiting to happen has been put to rest.

Thank you,

Jason McFarlane

Some not-so-fun facts for the nerds among us:

  • Over 4.4 million people live within 50 miles of the plant according to the NRC
  • Many people think the Fukushima plant in Japan melted down due to an earthquake but an important distinction is that it melted down due to a loss of power following the earthquake. The Peach Bottom plant could lose power due to over 1200 miles of electric wiring that is not all in places that get inspected regularly!
  • “This reactor site uses the same GE Mark I boiling water reactor as designed, constructed and operated at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station where three units melted down in March 2011.“
  • A government report titled PNNL-27120 that came out in 2017 on this particular style of nuclear plant had dire information that would cause any understanding citizen grave concern until one started to raise a fuss about it. Instead of resolving the issues, it appears that Exelon may have pressured the NRC into redacting information from the report and today that document has been revised to not include information we believe the public should know.
