The students of North Quincy High School would like to revoke the requirement of AP exams for the 2021 school year.

At Quincy High School, this year, students can receive advanced credit for their courses, without the requirement of taking the AP test in the spring. However, that is not an option at NQHS.

Due to the pandemic and the remote/ hybrid system, many students are not learning the content of their AP classes to the full extent that they have in years prior. Yet, we are expected to take a complete, non-shortened AP exam. With hybrid AP classes, prior to the start of quarter three, students were only taught synchronously by their teachers three out of five days during the week. That is insufficient for an AP course, where every class period is essential in preparing for the test. As for remote students, the inability to be hands-on with their teachers and learn in a traditional setting is detrimental when students are expected to take tests in an entirely different setting from that in which they learned, and because the majority of AP classes are remote, most students are facing this lack of connection. Many aspects of AP classes are missed as well, including science labs, paper tests, and in-class essays. While our teachers are doing a fantastic job, there are still limitations that exist with remote and hybrid learning that are out of their control.

Additionally, with a majority of the students in these classes taking multiple AP courses, and with each exam scheduled so close together, students will be interacting with others more and thus enhancing the possible spread of COVID-19. The majority of students do not feel comfortable entering the building, hence their decision to take classes remotely. Expecting these students to spend hours testing, surrounded by their peers, amid a pandemic, goes against their wishes of staying remote to avoid close contact. Even with the option of taking the exam at home, distractions such as a loud household and potential internet outages decrease the chances of students receiving scores they typically would in normal years. The College Board also does not offer a digital exam for AP languages, forcing those students into the building. Students should not have to worry about these external problems while taking this exam as they will be unable to truly focus on the test before them, rendering it useless in the first place.

Last year, AP exams were deemed optional because of the increase in cases, the confusion of the times, the quick change to remote learning, and the stress students were subjected to. However, these students received almost a full year of class time in a typical learning environment, and the units teachers were unable to reach were eliminated from the exam. The tests also were shortened. This year these problems still exist and are arguably more extreme, yet the test is the same length as a test pre-pandemic.

Therefore, the AP students of North Quincy High School are requesting the administration to make the AP tests optional for the 2021 school year. We hope you understand our concern and consider making this change.
