Your support is growing everyday, but so are planning applications for Intensive Livestock Units (ILUs). Right now we have a surge in the pipeline here in Montgomeryshire at a density unmatched in Europe. These factories will have profound negative impact on our landscape, leisure, environment, and biodiversity. Spreading highly toxic chicken manure will pollute our watercourses and biodiversity features, and finally drain into the River Severn with longterm consequences.

These units have a habit of popping up again in modified form. Your continued support will help prevent that happening at Newtown. Our final refusal will represent the first egg factory turned down for keeps in Powys - a real step forward. Sadly this is a drop in the ocean compared to over a hundred applications made in Powys since June 2015. Most received planning consent but over 30 remain undecided. Factory farming is promoted by our government and permitted by our councils, sometimes against their own guidelines. This is being done in your name and is both a local and national scandal. Help us spread success to more applications by ongoing support and by spreading the word please.

Then there’s the wider issue of all factory farms in Powys and beyond. Our country is at last waking up to the horrifying reality of factory farming and the suffering caused by bringing your egg and bacon to the table. Something to be proud of? Help us fight factory farming in all forms through your support.

Most ILU planning applications sail straight through because local residents are often blissfully ignorant of their inhumane nature or of how to oppose them.

First and foremost find out how your planning system works, who to contact and what the material planning issues are - your personal dislikes may not come into it. If you don’t know the ropes, then find someone who does - we did that.

Secondly, local issues are paramount, your council may not know about these till you tell them - for instance, a blind corner where accidents happen, a biodiversity feature such as Great Crested Newts or a manured field where local flooding pollutes a watercourse.

Publicity and petitions do encourage local people to object in writing, their views really do count - it is supposed to be their council!
