Why this petition matters

Started by Sarah Allen

The Nottoway County Board of Supervisors have decided to hold a referendum vote in regards to the  Jeffries Confederate Statue in front of Nottoway Courthouse Complex.  This referendum vote is unnecessary as well as expensive to the  county.  Instead of making a moral decision to remove a statue that does not represent the  values of our diverse Nottoway County, the Board of Supervisors have attempted to pass the decision to remove the statue, as well as the expense of holding a special election onto the citizens of the County.  Even after  the referendum, the Board must still vote on whether to remove the Statue or not, therefore this vote is just an attempt for Board Members to avoid responsibility.

Nottoway County is growing, we cannot be defined by offensive elements of our past to appease those who believe the Confederacy was a good thing. We need to be defined by our willingness to move forward and recognizing old symbols still cause pain, still reflect racial injustices, and  still hold their original meaning...to promote inequality.  We want businesses and citizens of all types to feel welcomed here.

Please sign this petition as show  Nottoway County Board of Supervisors we want this Statue removed.   Other counties have  already removed their statues such as Prince Edward, Albemarle, and many more.  Let your voice be heard.
