Reverse the life-threatening cuts to Retford & Ashfield fire stations

Nottinghamshire & City of Nottingham Fire & Rescue Authority have recently passed proposals to cut services at Ashfield and Retford fire stations.
These proposals include moving both stations to a retained cover service between the hours of 6pm and 8am. This will add at least 5 minutes to response times. Each passing minute can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.
Additionally, Ashfield is currently open 24 hours a day and has 26 operating firefighers. The Fire Authority is recommending a reduction to 12 full time firefighters working during the day.
These measures will save £500k a year per station. How can this figure be put on human life?
This news comes on the same day that the authority approved a 2.95 per cent increase in Council Tax to keep the service afloat. Residents are being asked to pay more for a reduced service, risking lives. Meanwhile, according to the Worksop Guardian, Worksop fire station is in line for a multi million upgrade. We are not saying that Worksop does not need this, but could this money be better distributed and used towards keeping an existing overnight service across all stations?
Our brave firefighters have been vocal in expressing their shock and horror at this situation. Thousands of concerned residents completed the consultation form, but they have been ignored.
We call on Nottinghamshire & City of Nottingham Fire & Rescue Authority to rethink these horrifying measures which are set to come into effect next year. There is still time to stop these cuts and effectively use the budget in place without risking lives.
