Stop the night shelter at Notintone House Windmill Lane
Why this petition matters
As most of you are aware we have recently found out that Nottingham City Council and The Salvation Army are in talks. Their aim is to turn the building on Windmill Lane into a 40 room homeless night shelter.
We agree there is a housing crisis and something needs to be done. But myself and the residents surrounding the building don’t feel that Sneinton is the answer. We already have a number of shelters in the area that provide assistance. We live in an deprived inner city area that has no facilities for rehabilitation. We also have little to no job prospects in the area.
We can’t see what benefit such a building will be for our community. If the building is up for let there are several other uses for it. Why hasn't a care home been considered? Or turning the building into commercial use, to provide jobs for the area?
We’re also concerned about the negative impact it will have on the surrounding businesses. We already have our share of anti-social behaviour and drug use in the car park and around the Windmill. Whilst I’m not saying all homeless people have addictions issues. Unfortunately the stats prove the two go hand in hand. Nottingham City Council have a vast property portfolio , the hostel would be better located in a none residential area. There are many buildings in the city centre that would be more suitable.
We're asking for your support to put a stop to the night shelter.
