A little over a week ago today, another black man’s life, George Floyd, was taken at the hands of a police officer. The world watched on as he continued to plead with the officer to give him a breath. This event has sparked outrage and sadness not only across the US, but across the world.

These events that taking place across the country, the world are truly extraordinary. People from all different backgrounds are speaking up like never before. Staying silent about these injustices that happen all too often is no longer acceptable.

We must do better; as students and teachers, as a school, and as a sisterhood. We must acknowledge how the black community at NDA is hurting and we must do something about it now.

The Educational Vision that the sisters of Notre Dame created states: “We form persons who are skilled and committed to journey together in hope as witnesses and catalysts for the responsible care of all God’s creation and for justice and peace, especially for those on the margins of society.” If this is who our school wants us to become, then our school must first be a model of that statement.

It’s time to be the leaders that our school is teaching us to be. Please sign this petition to demand that Notre Dame Academy make a statement on the murder that took place last week, systematic police brutality, and the racial injustices that are taking place across the country. #BlackLivesMatter
