Congressman John Lewis to receive Nobel Peace Prize Posthumously
Why this petition matters
John Lewis dedicated his life to battling on the front lines to end Jim Crow laws and any overt or covert systems that perpetuated racial injustice. He did not even spare his own physical body or freedoms to improve the racial climate for generations to come. Despite blows to his body and a fractured skull his indestructible hope travailed. Mr. Lewis was a valiant, indomitable force of the civil rights movement and the last surviving speaker from the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. He served in the house of representatives since 1986 and was correctly named the “conscience of the U.S. Congress.”
More than a half-century later, after the murder of George Floyd, Mr. Lewis welcomed the resulting global demonstrations against police killings of Black people and systemic racism. He encouraged people across the world to continue to stand up and get into “good trouble.” He saw those protests as a continuation of his life’s work. While attacking pancreatic cancer with the same zeal, he persisted in his fight for human rights, true freedom, and justice until the very end.
