We believe that the Valedictorian of Norton High School should have a spot entitled to them to speak at graduation if they so choose to. As of now they are not secured a spot to speak.

We have found an unfairness in the overlooking of allowing the Valedictorian the right they deserve to speak at graduation. It is etched in the definition of Valedictorian for them to give the Valedictory (farewell) speech at a commencement ceremony. As of now Norton is going through a "try out" process for who gets to speak at graduation. The class president has a spot entitled for them to do the Welcome and Introduction at graduation if they so choose too. ( They do not have to go through this tryout process) So shouldn't the Valedicorian get the right to deliver their farewell speech if they so choose to. Supporters and I feel the Valedictorian should have a spot and deserve to have that spot entitled for them in graduatuon. If they would like other speakers that is fine and the try out proccess would be very appropriate in that aspect. We would like to get this changed becuase it is not fair to the student who has worked extremely hard to be at the top of the class and speaking at graduation is really one of the main highpoints and rewards and it is being revoked from them if they are beat out in the tryout process. Just as the Class President has a spot we believe the Valedictorian should have a spot in the graduation ceremony as well if they choose to. We would liked to see this be effective for the graduating class of 2014 and for the years to come.
