Make Northwestern's Musical Theatre Program More Inclusive.

Make Northwestern's Musical Theatre Program More Inclusive.
The Issue
While I love Northwestern University dearly, their Musical Theatre program admissions procedure is incredibly flawed. Students from all over the country decide on attending the University because of Northwestern's successful theatre program, but, more specifically, its renowned Musical Theatre Certificate Program. However, once these students have already committed to, and spent money and time on, Northwestern's theatre program their first college quarters, nearly all of them are rejected from the program, (especially the students who have not been privileged enough to have had the family support or the money that others have been able to use in order to take private acting classes, enroll in prep-schools, attend summer training programs, etc.) This leaves many students with tough decisions regarding whether they should transfer schools, switch majors, re-evaluate career paths, etc. This program would be so much more respectful and courteous to students if these auditions were held before the interested freshmen committed to attending Northwestern University, or if the students were not subjected to an audition whatsoever. All Northwestern Students have worked extremely hard to get where they are, and it is not fair to continue cutting off more and more talented students from training, performance opportunities, and show-cases just because they didn't look as good in a 2 minute audition as a different student did. I think that Northwestern University could afford to allow many more people to partake in this valuable area of education.
