Make Northwestern Middle School's Lunch Shifts Longer
Though Northwestern Middle School is a more than appropriate and safe place to be educated, there are rarely any opportunities for the students to be free to have fun and be involved with other students. Studies show that loneliness or minimal human interaction can lead to dozens of mental health problems and disorders, such as anxiety, emotional distress, addictions, or depression. By the time the students get their lunch and sit down to converse with friends, it feels like they are only able to talk and have fun for a very short amount of time until the whistle is inevitably blown. My proposal is, take three minutes out of each hour. In both my seventh and eighth grade classes, I found that teachers are usually only reinforcing their main lesson, allowing the students to independently study or work, or allowing the students to read during the last three minutes of class. Three times seven is 21, and 21 extra minutes of lunchtime can really allow the students to converse and have fun more freely and actively. Studies also show that after a fun conversation, students are more likely to be more motivated in next classes of the grueling school day. I encourage the NMS staff to take action on this issue. Be Brave, NMS!
