Fiona McKay started this petition to Northumberland County Council and

Main Route:

This is a main route into Wylam with many vehicles, including larger lorries, coming into the village. Wylam is used as the main route as larger vehicles cannot fit over the Ovingham bridge to cross the river.

Poor Visibility:

Holeyn Hall Road includes two blind bends and one blind summit. At the 60mph limit, corners are cut leaving oncoming traffic, pedestrians and cyclists in danger.

Holeyn Hall Road has three concealed exits located on blind bends. Merging traffic must nudge out onto the 60mph road. Pavement crossings are also located on these blind bends. Pedestrians must cross this 60mph road with no road crossing strategies in place.

Holeyn Hall Road has narrow, poorly maintained pavements, leaving pedestrians little room.

Hexham Road traffic, leading to the crossroad both from east and west, arrive at the crossroad from dips in the road. This reduces driver’s awareness of the impending dangers upon approaching the crossroad. Three bus stops and a post box located opposite housing mean pedestrians are expected to cross the 60mph crossroad, again with no road crossing strategies in place.

School children will be expected to cross these roads this September 2019 to catch the Ovingham Middle School bus.

Statistics: In the past 5 years there have been 6 significant road traffic incidents on the stretch between the A69 and Wylam Village, more than Ovingham Road and Main Road (Wylam) combined (these are only ones serious enough to involve police; https://data.gov.uk/dataset/cb7ae6f0-4be6-4935-9277-47e5ce24a11f/road-safety-data

"...a car traveling at 60mph has roughly 4 times the energy of a car moving at 30mph, a 30mph collision is roughly 80% survivable but a 40mph one is roughly 80% fatal (http://www.safespeed.org.uk/killspeed.html 2019). 60mph is really pushing the limits of what you could survive!”

People are precious and irreplaceable. Please don't leave this issue only to implement changes once a life has been lost.
