Berwick Upon Tweed is Britain's only 100% walled town (original walls). Within the walls are over 300 listed buildings, most of which are on streets that follow alignments dating back 100's of years. The County Council intend to build a Coach Park in the middle of this historic town, bringing with it noise and pollution - as well as damage to the many old buildings to be found there. We need a coach park to bring in visitors, but there is an alternative site just outside the walls, a large car park which can easily accommodate coaches. It also has facilities for visitors, including toilets, a cafe and shop. Visitors can return to their coaches when they want, and this is so important for people with mobility issues, or with young children.

This map shows the options [SEE MAP HERE]It is taken from a consultation exercise being run by our local MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan, and this petition will be added to her responses

Site 1 is the County's preference - no toilets or cafe, visitors have to get off of the coach somewhere else, and cannot return to the coach, even if it is raining! There has been no consideration of the equalities issues, or the environmental impact. Test pits dug to examine the archaeology have already resulted in subsidence of an adjoining historic structure.

Site 3 is an existing central car park, which is located in the middle of a number of important buildings, including the listed 18thC Barracks, the Elizabethan Walls, and the Cromwellian Church. Whilst there is more room there are no visitor facilities, and coaches will have to try and navigate through narrow streets.

By signing this petition you are supporting option 2. It is just outside the walls, so minimises the environmental impact, it has a cafe & toilets, and could also have an information kiosk.

This is not a major international issue - it is a small local one. But we need your help. Berwick is a superb place, with outstanding built and natural heritage - we want visitors to come and enjoy this place. We want a Coach Park that is fit for purpose, and using a small piece of the existing car park just outside the walls is the perfect solution.
