Patrick Turner started this petition to Northumberland County Council

Since August 2020, Hexham Farmers’ Market has been traffic free in direct response to Covid-19. This has allowed the Market to expand into the Abbey grounds meaning more local producers can participate. Customers can shop safely as they walk around the town centre keeping a covid-secure distance from each other. A traffic-free environment has been good for safety, for business, for air quality and has added to a relaxed and continental atmosphere.

Northumberland County Council Highways Team are set to remove covid-secure traffic restrictions from 17th May. This is despite the Government providing £56 million to local councils in the ‘Welcome Back Fund’ initiative, intended to support the return to high streets safely and help build back better from the pandemic.

Do you want the Farmers’ Market to stay traffic-free? Do you want to shop safely in an open and low risk environment? Do you want to relax at an outdoor cafe in quiet surroundings?

Sign the petition and protect our town!
