Natasha Hawkins started this petition to North Somerset Council

Our precious 4-year-old Nash is due to start school in September 2022. Nash is disabled, he is autistic and non-verbal, has developmental delay, PICA and has very complex needs. Our local authority has placed Nash in a mainstream school rather than a specialist school that can handle his complex needs. The specialist school is happy to accommodate Nash and take him in in September, however, the council has stopped this from happening.

This means that Nash will not be safe and his care needs will not be met in school.

Nash’s mental age ranges from birth to 33 months old, despite his actual age of 4-years-old. It is important to understand that he has little understanding of the world that he lives in. My son is unable to express his needs, he does not understand emotions and finds it hard to self regulate. Nash has no safety awareness and needs adult support in everything that he does and when he starts school in September, it is vital that he gets adult support to ensure his needs are met and he is kept safe.

The specialist school we applied for has qualified, trained staff who know how to navigate working with children like Nash. They have the needed equipment and therapy on-site that will help with Nash’s learning and development.

This wouldn't be the case in the mainstream school. The environment alone, within the mainstream school, would be too much for Nash and risk harm for himself and others. The school confirmed to us that they cannot meet Nash’s needs. And yet, North Somerset Council still decided to place Nash there!

We are appealing this decision imposed by the local authority, as we know this will be detrimental to Nash's level of care, mental health and well-being. Along with the safety of others, Nash will affect the education of other children in a mainstream school. He will be disruptive and very physical with not only his peers but teachers too!

We want Nash to be with qualified professionals, peers with the same or similar difficulties. With fewer children in the classroom, it would already be an environment that would encourage calm behaviour from Nash. We want him to be safe and feel protected.

His education should consist of life skills. I hope one day he can brush his hair, put on his own clothes and shoes. To learn how to feed himself without adult support.

I can not change the world for Nash. He will need to learn where he fits. Without the right school, the correct lessons, he won't learn this. He will struggle and regress in the wrong environment and he will be under great distress.

The dream for me would be that he is supported in a safe environment where he faces no distress. We feel failed by our council for being the obstacle to this dream.

Please help me, my family and Nash to get his care needs to be met by signing and sharing this petition. My beautiful boy, my heart. I will continue to fight for what is right.
