Dear Northport Village Residents,

On Wednesday May 29th at 2 p.m. at Huntington Town Hall the Town Board will hold a public hearing to discuss a proposed 40-year lease agreement between the Village of Northport and the Town for the former’s future use and operation of the Woodbine Marina.  Under the terms of this proposed agreement the Village would lease the 46-slip marina and a 23-space parking lot, as well as the outdated bathroom facilities and assume responsibility for all future maintenance costs and upkeep.

Why is the Town seeking to transfer control of Woodbine Marina to the Village?  The answer is simple, the Town of Huntington would like to pass on the enormous expense to Northport Village taxpayers.  The recent renovations to the marina came at a steep price for Town residents, $1.8 million taxpayer dollars to be exact.  Further, there have been numerous storms over the past four years that have destroyed floating docks within the marina costing Town taxpayers another $200,000 in repairs.  Incredibly, that means Town taxpayers have paid $2 million dollars to repair a marina which caters exclusively to only 46 boaters. That equates to approximately $43,478 per boat slip.  The Town Board does not wish to further burden its taxpayers with such a tremendous expense so their solution is simple, lease the marina to the Village and pass the cost on to Northport Village residents, thereby avoiding any further debt.

Why does the Village of Northport wish to take on this burden? To add 23 parking spaces.  At first glance this appears to be a great idea.  After all, Village parking is already in short supply.  But why should Northport’s 7,405 residents be forced to bear financial responsibility for funding a marina that benefits only 46 boat owners (who aren’t all Village residents) for the chance to snag a parking space from time to time.  Northport Village taxpayers need to be informed of the expense that the Village is about to undertake.  The Town has publicly stated that the bulkhead at Woodbine Marina has reached its useful life.  As a professional dock builder I estimate that the bulkhead has a life span of a maximum of 10 years.  This means that in the next 10 years, Northport Village taxpayers will be responsible for footing the bill for the new bulkhead which will cost in excess of $750,000. There will be additional costs to Village residents as well. The north dock will need to be supplemented with wave protection, which was removed during the 2016 faulty renovation.  The cost to fix this issue is upwards of $500,000.  All of this for the Village to obtain more parking?  If the Town wishes to rid itself of the burden of funding the Woodbine Marina that is their prerogative, but Village residents should not be left financially on the hook for this impending disaster.

Northport Village taxpayers need to put a stop to this before it’s too late.  So I urge you to come out to Huntington Town Hall on May 29th at 2 p.m. and ask this important question of both the Town and the Northport Village Board. Why should the Village operate this marina using taxpayer dollars to subsidize the cost when local businesses are ready, willing and able to not only accommodate the 46 slip holders but provide parking for Village residents as well?  Please tell Huntington’s Town Trustees to lease out this marina the same way they lease out their golf courses, ice rinks and concession stands.  Northport Village should not incur the cost of this facility at the expense of its taxpayers. The Village has never been in the marina business and should remain sidelined here.
