The Northport-East Northport School district is known to be an excellent district with high standards of both learning and teaching.  Families move here because they want to give that educational opportunity to their children.  But the current school reopening plan is short-changing all the students.

Those families who, for various reasons, have chosen the Daily Remote option will see their students' engagement with a live teacher drop to a single abbreviated day each week.  As will any students who have to quarantine because of exposure or illness.  While those who are choosing to send their students in-person are only getting three days - one of them a shortened version.

The only grades receiving five day synchronous learning are elementary students.  This is being done because of the emotional needs of the younger students, but the educational needs of the secondary students are just as important.  In order to continue their education on the same level, it is vital that our secondary students have the same educational opportunity that our elementary students are being given.

With school districts around the country offering live access to students' own classrooms during their remote learning days, the idea that Northport-East Northport with its much-lauded and highly prized educational system can't offer the same is not understandable.

Locally, Huntington, East Islip, Three Village, Trinity, Syosset and many others will allow their remote students to sign via Google Meets or Zoom so that they can see the smart board and other teaching materials.  Teachers are being trained to interact with students in their classrooms and online simultaneously.  Yes, it's a new way of working.  No, it won't be easy at first.  But it's an absolute necessity if the district hopes to keep our students on the same footing as those in schools all around them.  It is unthinkable that our students should be allowed to fall behind their peers because of a lack of dedication to exploring, updating and utilizing all the technology currently being employed by so many other districts.

We urge the Board of Education and Superintendent Banzer to reconsider their decision to not offer live synchronous remote learning to their secondary students and to act quickly to assure their educational opportunities are in line with what other districts are offering.
