Killowen Outdoor Education Centre (KOEC), first opened in 1987, has been providing adventurous residential experiences for 11-17 year olds. Situated in a scenic area, this Education Centre is facing closure despite the strong opposition towards this proposal.
KOEC offers educational opportunities differ from local sports, offering people a chance to try new challenges as well as develop new skills and make new, lasting friendships.
From a range of sailing, rock climbing, canoeing, camping, bouldering, the activities at KOEC attract people as far as Belfast.
The centre runs a funded "Aspirants Course" every year, allowing teenagers to gain invaluable experience in canoeing, mountaineering and sailing, thus allowing them to become instructors for the next years courses. Closing down the centre would lead to missed opportunities such as this.
The Centre has 24 staff of whom jobs are threatened with this sudden closure. KOEC also offers people the chance to volunteer over the summer to help teach and promote the activities, some of which have been volunteering for over 7 years and have made lifelong friendships and learned valuable skills and qualities.
The proposal to close this Centre is a heartbreaking one for the dedicated staff, volunteers and as stated by local DUP councillor, William Walker, "a big loss to the community".
