NSU Tahlequah Sidewalk Dedication for Nicholas Griffith

NSU Tahlequah Sidewalk Dedication for Nicholas Griffith
Nicholas Griffith was a 2008 NSU graduate who advocated for himself as a wheelchair user for accessible sidewalks on campus. Nick shared shortly before his passing how a certain sidewalk on campus should be named after him because of everything he had to do to get that sidewalk put into place. He told me how his route to class was on the road that goes around the campus to get to the old science building. His able bodied peers could just walk through the grass to get to the same building, but his wheelchair prevented him from doing so. Nick explained how he put in dozens of formal complaints about this issue and finally won his battle after convincing an administrator, we believe to be Dr. Ron Cambiano, to follow Nick on his journey to class using his extra chair. The administrator then realized how much effort it took to go all the way around campus in a wheelchair, uphill, then finding the one accessible door into that building. Nick went on to be a teacher for Union Public Schools and was named UPS Seventh Grade Teacher of the Year in 2021. Nick passed away unexpected on January 9th, 2022 and leaves behind his wife and their young daughter. I believe Nick is an important part of the history of NSU's accessibility and I know it would mean the world to everyone who knew him to officially name this campus sidewalk after him. Officially dedicating this sidewalk to Nick would be a memorial of accessibility, advocacy, and change for NSU and all its past, current, and future students and faculty.
