They say Northamptonshire is one of England's best kept secrets. It now seems that knowledge of our history will be too! Why is it we pay council tax to cover such facilities and then end up paying for it again. Surely this is fraud.

It would be as bad as charging to go into Libraries. Keep such resources free at the point of use - central government should not shirk responsibilities either!

I'm a qualified archivist and am disgusted that a local authority should attempt to restrict access to historical records in this way. Archives are supposed to preserve the evidence of rights, privileges, responsibilities and duties for all not just for those who can afford access. Shame on Northamptonshire County Council.

I might as well give up being a university academic if this continues. My husband is an archivist and many of my friends are historians. No one is made of money under this government and it is outrageous that knowledge should be for sale in this way! Do we plan on raising a generation of people whose only access to information is a biased BBC?

free access to archives is important and should not be related to ability to pay.

Another County cut to save money which will further disadvantage those on lower incomes. It all stems from the squeeze by Central Government.

The archives don’t belong to the Council, they belong to us. It’s OUR HISTORY dammit!
