DEMAND LOCAL ACTION TO ENGAGE CONCERNS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE IN NORTHAMPTON COUNTY

We, the undersigned, respectfully state that we believe municipalities need to take the lead in enacting climate action plans, policies and groups in order to address the immediate and dire needs of climate change.

Climate change is the most important issue facing humanity in the 21st century. At a time when the Federal Government is greenlighting pipelines like the DAPL and the Keystone XL, gutting the EPA and threatening to violate the 2016 Paris Agreement, I believe it is imperative and morally prudent for municipalities to follow the lead and initiative of Bethlehem. We have major concerns in the Lehigh Valley that, although seemingly isolated to individual municipalities, have cumulative impacts through the Lehigh Valley.

It is obvious that the current administration’s policies are short sighted and extreme dangerous, yet corporate greed has leeched the integrity of our federal and state legislators who have acquiesced to the interests the oil and gas industry, business and investors who want to further develop fossil fuel extraction. They choose to do so when there are proven renewable resources and a path to a clean energy future that would gainfully employ U.S. citizens and transition the country to sustainable energy.

They choose to keep the U.S. dependent on dirty energy, despite the overwhelming evidence and confirmation by the scientific community of human induced climate change. Furthermore, we are keenly aware that our current energy system is based on the exploitation of landowners and the environment to extract fossil fuels from beneath the earth. We recognized that the cumulative impacts to land, water and air as well as human health and safety equally threaten the natural environment and global climate such that the risks far outweigh the benefits of extracting fossil fuels.

We recognize that communities have the right to choose to seek energy beyond the policies enacted by the state and federal government and that these energy choices – wind, solar and hydro—can help change the energy landscape at a grassroots level.  We recognize that if local communities choose to seek out sustainable energy choices that this will have a positive effect on those communities within the sacrifice zone, whose municipalities have been transformed into little more than industrial playgrounds.

We have major concerns in the Lehigh Valley that, although seemingly isolated to individual municipalities, have cumulative impacts through the Lehigh Valley.

We agree with the City Council that the best way to sustain progress is to reach out to the community to develop new partnerships but, I believe that needs to extend beyond the city limits and unite neighboring municipalities together in the effort to protect the environment, which is another reason why it is imperative that this municipality engage in creating climate change policy and action.
