Parish Councils and Meetings should rule on plans for fracking within their jurisdiction.

North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has granted licences to a number of fracking companies in order for them embark on industrial gas extraction in this beautiful rural area. There was significant opposition across the county before the licenses were granted but NYCC went ahead regardless. The local authority appears to be more interested in the financial benefits of fracking than the concerns of residents in rural communities or any potential damage to the environment.
At present local residents and Parish Councils have no say in this process while landowners are being approached by fracking companies with offers of cash and the prospect of legal action.
This petition puts forward the proposition that Parish Councils or Meetings, as the legitimate grass roots level of democracy in North Yorkshire, be granted the fair and reasonable power to decide (accept or turn down) plans by petrochemical companies to extract gas within their jurisdiction.
