NO to Charges for post 16 North Yorks SEND home school transport

There is a loop hole in the law where local authorities can charge students from age 16-18 for home school transport. For Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities this is a vital service that ensures they can access their education. Many cannot travel on public transport, many need trained medical escorts. North Yorkshire is a county of 3000+ sq miles and there are few places of education for this age group therefore they need to travel long distances to reach their colleges. Students with SEND are not afforded the equal chocies regarding transport as their non disabled peers, many cannot travel independently and are mainly educated outside their localities. Parents are being given the 'opportunity' of transporting their young person which would for many take up 4 hours each day or more, parent/carers have other family responsibilites or work. Under 16's and 19+ are entitled to free transport the 16-18 year olds fall into a gap which LA's are looking to exploit by starting to charge. Pupils and students with SEND are seeing more and more of their services and support reduced year on year. Please support this petition by saying NO to charges. Thank you
