Holly Davison started this petition to North Tyneside Council

As a resident of Benton I want improvements to Goathland Avenue.

The traffic is extremely heavy at peak times. Drivers can wait more than 20 minutes to cross a small stretch of road. Most of the street is one lane however approaching the traffic lights, after the traffic island, it is split into two lanes.

Due to the long waiting times and no alternative route, drivers are driving on the wrong side of the road to pass the traffic island and reach the lane to turn right faster. I understand the drivers’ frustrations however it is extremely dangerous. Residents have been very close to being hit while coming off their drives, school children have almost been run over while crossing the road because of cars driving on the wrong side of the road, cars turning out from side streets do not expect a car to be on the wrong side of the road, people waiting at bus stops are at risk. I do not believe that anyone intends to cause harm however it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident due to someone driving on the wrong side of the road.

It is my belief that removing the traffic island would allow the council to create two lanes of traffic for a longer stretch. This will reduce congestion and make the road a lot safer for everyone involved.  Yellow cross hatch sections should be placed in front of side streets to allow residents to safely access Goathland Avenue.

Please support this and sign the petition. Hopefully we can get a swift response and a positive action for all affected.

Thank you
