Nicki Corbitt started this petition to North Tyneside Council

The council have decided to pedestrianise Park View in Whitley Bay. The “consultation”, a letter received on Saturday that these changes would be effective this week!
I have been there today. There are no pedestrians using the road; they’re all on the pavement. More worryingly I’ve heard from retailers that this is having a disastrous effect on takings. They report no visitors to shops this week, takings down 50%. We should all be trying to help our local businesses to recover not making life harder for them. Not only is it obstructing access but the loss of parking along Park View will significantly impact on older residents not able to walk from home or car parks further from Park View.
This combined with the closure of part of the seafront has channelled all traffic from Whitley Bay to Tynemouth onto 2 other very busy roads; Earsdon/Seatonville Rd and Park Avenue. Both of these run past schools; great for school safety.
Speaking of safety, there appears to be little thought to emergency vehicle access. From what I have seen there is no way a fire engine could access without someone physically getting out and moving obstructing bollards, planters and barriers. For streets such as Warkworth Avenue the only other access in an emergency would be via a narrow back lane which is often obstructed by parked vehicles (often belonging to residents and shop owners not just shoppers).
Those with a long  memory will remember the last attempt at pedestrianisation of the centre of Whitley Bay, at great cost, which was reversed rapidly (at further great cost) as it failed.
Please sign this petition to make sure we learn from past mistakes, keep out neighbours safe and support our Town Centre.
