North Northamptonshire Council has declared a Climate Emergency. This is very welcome. But if there's an emergency normally something needs to happen - and quickly. But there is little sign of urgent action to date. This petition, from Wellingborough Extinction Rebellion (XR), makes some proposals for the kinds of urgent action that is required for us to make a contribution towards reducing carbon emissions (that are driving climate change/destruction) and protecting our environment in Northamptonshire. Climate Emergency - Take Action Now!

We the undersigned call upon North Northamptonshire Council to take urgent emergency action to save our planet from a climate disaster.

We call up on you to Declare that North Northamptonshire will be carbon neutral by 2030 at the latest and at least adopt the following urgent measures:

1.     All new homes and other buildings build from 2025 onwards to be carbon neutral and all incorporate solar technology. Older buildings to be fully insulated.

2.     Sustainable planning of new developments including significant actual affordable and social housing

3.     To plant at least 10,000 trees by 2025. Significantly expand any existing tree planting programmes and not allow developers to cut down existing woodlands/trees. Ensure protection of nature reserves, woodlands and recognise/develop more sites for wildlife. Look seriously at issues of bio-diversity (e.g. wild flower areas in public areas, roadside verges etc).

4.     Plan for 100% refuse recycling by 2030

5.     Significantly increase investment in public transport and walk/cycle networks. Improve off-road cycle routes; install dedicated wide cycle lanes along key roads that connect towns and villages across the area.

6.     Sustainable economic development (e.g. adopt the Preston Model) and support a national Green New Deal
