Having a child with additional and complex needs can be a daily struggle but couple that with year on year, change, unsafe practices & poor tendering of transport arrangements to get children safely to school makes life a nightmare at times. My son has quite complex needs and as such has to attend a school which is 20 miles away.
He has had around 12 different drivers over the space of 2 years, 7 weeks with no transport at all and now, we have been told that our son has to lose 12.5 hours of education a week as it suits the driver better. The more I share my story with others, the more I learn that I am not alone with feelings of anger and disappointment in the arrangements made by North Lanarkshire council, which even by other council departments, is viewed as "just the way it is". No, it should not be the way, our children are entitled to a full time education and to be transported in a way that does not limit their entitlement and that can ensure their safe arrival at school.
12 different drivers for children with autism is a complete nightmare and has directly resulted in our sons increased anxiety and risk when being transported to school, but cost seems to over ride the level of damage it does to our children.
I am starting a campaign in the hope to have this poor practice addressed with the hope of reducing the likelihood another family and young person have to go through the experience we, and many others I know have gone through over last few years.
